Austin, Texas, like many parts of the country, faces a growing crisis of food insecurity, with nearly 5 million Texans experiencing hunger—1.7 million of them children.
During a Be The Neighbor trip in Austin, participants will engage directly with the city’s ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity. Through hands-on service at urban gardens, food pantries, and other organizations addressing poverty and hunger, groups will learn about food justice while actively supporting local initiatives. The trip also provides a space for deeper reflection on the systemic issues driving hunger, as participants hear from experts in the field and engage in advocacy work, including a mock legislative hearing at the Texas Capitol. Austin offers a dynamic environment for understanding both the immediate and long-term actions needed to advance food justice for all.
Your group will explore how the topics you’re learning about are relevant to your own community and will develop a plan for how you can continue this work when you get home. Be The Neighbor weeks are learning and launching trips, meaning participants will leave the week equipped to live lives of love, service, and justice in ways that are relational, sustainable, and dignity affirming
